Mountain Buffalo Hunting Mt. Gelai - Tanzania

"Hunt the Ghost of the Mountains"

After hunting Mt. Loosimingor for 23 years (1999-2022), the Tanzanian government has decided that the Essimingor Forest Reserve (Mt. Loosimingor) will no longer be part of any hunting area.

From 2024 I will be able to offer a very limited number of mountain buffalo hunts on Mt. Gelai in Northern Maasailand/Tanzania - a mountain I hunted from 1993-95 before settling on Mt. Loosimingor.

Mt. Gelai (dormant volcano) rises to 2,942 metres in northern Maasailand, just south of the Kenyan border and east of Lake Natron. The Mt. Gelai buffalo hunt offers the most challenging Cape buffalo hunt in Africa. I have personally guided buffalo hunts in the mountains of northern Maasailand for over 30 years and my team and I have perfected our style of buffalo stalking in this stunning but challenging environment. Because we only hunt single, old bulls or bulls from bachelor groups, we maintain a very healthy buffalo population on the mountain. You are likely to see buffalo several times a day.

The trophy quality is excellent, but what makes this hunt so special is the fact that you will be hunting buffalo all day on foot from a beautifully situated mountain hut! We usually come within a very short distance of the buffalo, which makes iron-shooting the preferred hunting style.

If you come on a 10 day buffalo hunt, it is possible to enjoy our very comfortable main camp on the plains to hunt some of the Maasai species (such as Grant's gazelle, Thomson's gazelle, wildebeest and others) before or after the mountain hunt.

The Lake Natron East Concession

Embedded in the Great Rift Valley, just adjacent to the actual Lake Natron and the active volcano Oldonyo Lengai lays this hunting concession "Lake Natron East" which includes Mt. Gelai. This 575.000 acres concession provides some of the finest hunting for most of the endemic species of Maasailand. There is no other area where you have a near 100% chance of successfully hunting the key Maasai species of Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk and Fringe-Eared Oryx. In addition, the leopards in this part of the Maasai - especially on Mt. Gelai - are renowned for their enormous size and beautiful dark colouring.

The habitat varies tremendously from open plains and arid woodland to acaciabrush country and the mountain forests stretching from 7000 to nearly 10000 feet on Mt. Gelai, providing habitat for  a wide variety of species. This area is the number one destination for the discerning sportsman looking to hunt a wide range of Masailand species including big leopard and buffalo in one safari. The beautiful scenery and abundance of game also makes it the perfect location for non hunting guests looking for a one of a kind photographic experience.

Main hunting season for Mountain Buffalo:  August to October & December to March

Main hunting season for Maasai species:  All year round
